The question I’m asked more than any other is, “What are you seeing in the market right now?”
If your head is spinning, you’re not alone.
If you work in communications, public relations, or agency leadership, the ground feels like it’s shifting almost daily. In just the past few months, we’ve seen major agency consolidations, restructuring announcements, and client spending reductions. Familiar names are disappearing, merging, or being absorbed into larger organizations.
It’s easy to look at those headlines and assume the story is all about contraction but from where I sit, that’s only half of it. The more interesting story is what happens next.
Every market disruption creates a redistribution of talent. Right now, we’re watching some of the industry’s most experienced and talented communications professionals enter the market, many for the first time in years. Independent agencies, boutiques, and mid-sized firms suddenly have access to talent they simply couldn’t have attracted a few years ago. Leaders who may have spent their entire careers inside global networks are now open to conversations they never would have entertained before.
The agencies paying attention see this. They’re having conversations. They’re building relationships. They’re creating room for talent that previously felt out of reach. And if history is any guide, that’s where things get really interesting.
I watched something very similar happen during the 2008-2009 downturn. If you were around during that time, you’ll remember it too. The large agencies reduced headcount. Incredibly strong and talented people landed at boutiques and independent firms. Some launched agencies of their own, some of which are now easily recognizable names.
And then something else happened. Clients followed.
Not because of the agency logo on the door, but because they trusted the people doing the work. That’s the part of the story I think gets overlooked whenever we focus solely on mergers and restructurings. Relationships still matter. Reputation still matters. Great talent still matters.
The firms that emerge strongest from periods like this are often the ones that recognize the opportunity before everyone else does. The talent displacement we’re seeing today is real, as is the uncertainty, but so is the opportunity.
If you’re paying close attention, this moment feels less like a contraction and more like a redistribution of talent, influence, and ultimately, market share. And after spending nearly three decades in this industry, we know that whenever the market experiences disruption, talent moves. And when talent moves, opportunities follow.
We’ve seen this movie before. The details are different, but the pattern feels familiar.
