There was a lesson floating through my emails last week.
I know you reached out back in 2025 but…
While I wasn’t ready to make a move when you first contacted me….
A thousand apologies for not responding to your notes while I was at….
Do you see a pattern?
It wasn’t that the opportunities weren’t aligned. It wasn’t that these individuals weren’t interested. It was timing. And more importantly, it was silence.
We know that most people only engage with recruiters when they’re actively looking. On the surface, that makes sense. Why spend time on something that isn’t immediately relevant? But relationships don’t work that way.
The best opportunities rarely appear exactly at the moment you decide you’re ready. And if you’re not paying attention, they pass just as quickly. Responding to a recruiter isn’t a commitment to leave your job. It’s not a commitment to explore an opportunity. It’s simply a signal that you’re open to a conversation, now or later.
That small action matters more than people realize. When you respond, even to say, “not now,” you do a few important things:
- You stay on the radar.
- You build a relationship before you need one.
- You create a future point of entry and not when you’re in a rush.
On the other hand, when you don’t respond, you close a door you didn’t even realize might be valuable down the line. The messages I received last week weren’t just follow-ups. They were reminders that timing changes. Priorities shift. Roles that didn’t make sense a year ago suddenly do.
But now the landscape has changed too. The roles are long since filled. The team restructured. The moment passed. This isn’t about being “always available.” It’s about being intentional.
A simple response: “I’m not looking right now, but I’d be open to staying in touch” takes less than a minute. And it keeps the conversation alive in a way that benefits you, not just the recruiter.
Because when the right moment comes along (and it will), you won’t be starting from scratch. You’ll already have a network, context, and a door that’s been left open.
